“Come for a ride with me,” my mom’s boyfriend suggests one day.

I’m alone in the house with him while my mom went to go get something. Strange men in the house is an everyday occurrence.

“Where are we going?” I ask.

The promises of puppies and a few other things are enough to spark the curiosity of my eight-year-old brain.

So I go with him.

I watch my house disappear as we drive away, immediately knowing I’ve made a bad decision.

“Can I go home now?” I ask.

He doesn’t let me.

Getting into a stranger’s vehicle was something I never did again after that day. Not until Gruff threw me into his. And look where that got me.

I try to tuck the memories back in just as I’ve done a million times before so I don’t lose it and give us away. My heart hurts, wanting to scoop up those boys and bring them back to their homes before anything that cannot be undone falls upon them.

Evan stands and reaches out his hand. “Come on, let’s go,” he says. Slowly, with a wavering hand, I accept it and rise to follow him out of here.

Whenever I fall behind, Evan guides me with his hand on my lower back, making sure I’m keeping up as we make our way back into town. I follow in a daze, desperately trying to keep the memories at bay before I break down. After finally passing Evan’s street, I know we’re close.

When we get into my backyard, Evan walks me underneath the deck where it’s dark and the moonlight keeps us out of view.

“Are you okay?” His furrowed brow is both curious and concerned.

My chin trembles and I can’t hold in my emotions anymore. “They’re only children,” I weep.

He steps forward and gently holds me to him, rubbing my back as I cry into his neck for much longer than anticipated. “I know,” he says soothingly. “I know.” He doesn’t know, but his genuine concern shows patience as he holds me tight, trying to comfort me for reasons beyond his knowledge.

I release Evan and look up. A line of light from between two pieces of wood from the deck above falls perfectly across his face. He brings his hand up and brushes my matted hair, wet from tears, out of my eyes.

“Evan,” I say as his troubled features take in my somber ones.

“Yes?”

“We’ve got to take them with us. When we escape.”

His forehead creases. “Julie …”

“What? Why can’t we?”

Still holding onto me, he says, “We could die trying to get out like all the others before us. Do you honestly think we should jeopardize their lives like that?”

“But we can’t just leave them here.”

“We can’t take them with us, either. What if their parents come looking for them and they’re not here? We don’t even know where they’re from. Or what actually happened for that matter.”

I take a step back, out of his grasp. “Why are you saying all this? You saw them.”

“I did, but I’m trying to think of the right thing to do in this situation.
